Empowering More Equitable Access to Healthcare Innovation
Over the past decade, major leaps in healthcare technologies have transformed and elevated the quality and delivery of care, from therapeutics, to diagnostics, procedures and other interventions. The rapid development of COVID-19 vaccines that have saved millions of lives globally has demonstrated what is possible. However, these breakthroughs in innovation have in some cases widened existing gaps in healthcare access and equity across and within markets. Closing these gaps will require addressing barriers relating to healthcare financing, availability of healthcare services, supply and distribution of products, and even the trust of stakeholders in the healthcare system.
In this Summit, we will explore these barriers to equitable access to innovation-driven, value-based healthcare and hear about potential solutions for improving patient access in Asia. Individual sessions will focus on specific barriers by bringing together different perspectives to address the challenge. We will also explore learnings from the pandemic response – what worked well and what needs to be improved. The sessions will be linked by overarching themes of Innovative business models driven by digital technology, strategic collaboration and partnerships.

Achieving equitable access to healthcare innovation in a complex region
- Patients in mature markets in Asia generally have better access to the latest and most innovative treatments due to higher affordability, more robust government coverage and more developed healthcare infrastructure. Whereas in emerging markets, we see more gaps in equity and access due to different levels of affordability and financial coverage as well as availability of healthcare and general infrastructure, particularly between patients in urban versus rural areas.
- In this session, we will hear how governments can develop and implement strategies to provide the best available healthcare (including new technologies) to all with existing resources.

Partnering for health
Building strategic partnerships to achieve goals for access and equity
- Public systems in the emerging markets do not currently provide widespread access to innovative therapies due to financial and healthcare infrastructure barriers.
- In this session, we will explore opportunities in both public-private partnerships (including national and local governments, and multi-lateral organizations), and private-private partnerships (between pharmaceutical companies and insurance, diagnostic, and even digital players), to improve patient access to innovative healthcare solutions.

Securing trust in the healthcare system: how does this help drive access and equity?
- Building and maintaining trust in healthcare and delivery depends on three key factors: minimise equalities in patient access due to bribery and corruption, increase patient access to reliable information and products, and safeguard patient information and privacy.
- In this session, we will examine how patient access to potentially life-saving therapies is impacted by patient faith in the healthcare system, as well as the critical role compliance plays in fostering that trust.

Building value-based healthcare financing models that deliver equitable access
- In value-based healthcare delivery, providers are reimbursed based on quality of patient health outcomes rather than quantity of services rendered. This incentivises better healthcare and lowering costs associated with inefficient or inappropriate healthcare resources utilisation or services delivered.
- In this session, we will share perspectives from markets which have developed and implemented successful healthcare financing models to support equitable access to innovative healthcare products that improve patient health outcomes.
